Bucking the trend of waiting until MWC in Barcelona, the team at Huawei chose last week’s CES to unveil their Ascend Mate smartphone. The company bills the Ascend Mate as having the World’s largest smartphone screen. This comes in the form of a 6.1-inch HD IPS+ display, with a native resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels – protected by the now seemingly obligatory Corning Gorilla glass. The phone’s screen-to-body ratio is 73%, the highest in the industry.
As you’d expect with “the World’s largest screen” – the Ascend Mate does a good job of covering the majority of your palm, measuring 6.5 x 3.4 x 0.4 inches and weighing in at 198g. Under the ‘hood’, the phone runs on the Android 4.1 and is powered by Huawei’s Hi-Silicon 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. You’d expect the huge screen to have a major impact on battery life, but Huawei claim that with a 4050 mAh battery and the company’s QPC and ADRX smart power-saving technology, the smartphone provides up to two days of ordinary usage on a single charge.
Other features of the Ascend Mate include an 8.0-megapixel AF rear-facing camera with HDR and 1.0-megapixel HD front-facing camera. The device also provides dual MIC noise reduction technology, Dolby sound system and stereo recording. It will be available in either ‘Crystal Black’ or ‘Pure White’.
