Landslides

 Landslides is a natural process in which rocks, debris or parts of land slide down wards. It generally occurs on the steep surface of hills. In the context of Nepal, it is found that landslides destroys a large number of lives and a large amount of property every year.
            
 One of the main causes of landslides is Deforestation. The necked areas are eroded by rainfall and wind. It leads to soil erosion and then landslides takes place. Continuous rainfall for a long period also causes landslides. Sometimes, landslides occurs because of the construction of highways and dams. Earthquakes and bomb explosions also play a vital role in the occurrence of landslide.
             
 Different measures are to be adopted according to the nature of the place to control landslides. In fragile areas, construction of roads and dams should be restricted. Plantation should be done in some places. Landslides can be controlled by constructing stone walls and by planting fast growing plants. Retaining walls should be constructed at the place where continuous landslides occurs. Terrace framing should be done on the steep surface of hills.
